Saturday night 1/4/2003

The final night of the Fieldhouse in downtown Iowa City.  (Read the full story here.)
The Fieldhouse had been an icon in Iowa City for 28 years, and...amongst other honors...was where Jaymz Larson of
Upper Deck Entertainment and Mediacom's "It All Adds Up", Shannon Appleby of Autumn Quest Productions and I founded the Cedar Rapids Media Elite in early 2001.
(The good news is the owner who shut the place down, my cousin Lew Converse, still owns College Street Billiards across the street, so I always have a home on the Ped Mall.)
It was a sad night, but one where Karol Kelly finally had her dream come true!  (More on that later.)

Click here to return to the main page.

Okay, first we start with the night before, and New York comic Artie Fletcher at Penguins Comedy Club.
Artie was on
KRNA with Big D and me that morning and has been on just about every cop show you can imagine in the last couple of years.  His official site is www.nycbadboy.com.

Artie on-stage.

After the show we caught Eddie Piccard and "Jazz At The Top" on the 16th floor of the Crowne Plaza Five Seasons Hotel, which is also featured here on this site.

Big D grabs his fiancee Kim's ass on the dance floor.

Artie and Big D, just chillin'.

Now, the historic final night at The Fieldhouse, with lots of quasi-celebrity cameos...

Arriving at the Fieldhouse for the last time...

Do I look sad enough?

My sister Lisa.

Jeremy Freerks from the Magic Bus and Iowa City Ducks Rugby.
(More Magic Bus photos can be found on this site here and here.)

Lisa and Tim O'Donnell (who went to elementary school with my brother and I've known since I was about 4 years old).

Lisa, Tim and me.

Lew Converse, (former) owner of The Fieldhouse.

DJ Breakfast, who I went to City High with the two years I was there.

The dance floor (hopping as always).

Karol Kelly.  (Little did she know what awaited her...)

My cousin Cindy Converse (who is married to Lew, if you couldn't tell from her last name).

Tim curses the fates for the Fieldhouse shutting down, while his girlfriend laughs at his drunk ass.

A mixed group of both Iowa and Missouri fans build a tower out of the old "Mug Night" mugs Lew was giving away.  (Iowa lost to Missouri in men's basketball earlier in the day.)

(Coincidentally enough, there's actually a "Fieldhouse" bar in Columbia, MO, which based itself on the one in Iowa City.  They even have the same logo.)

I wanted to take a picture of the infamous "naked guy" photo by the bathrooms, but some woman decided to get into the shot.
Read into this what you will...

Charity Reynolds, of Magic Bus fame.

Karol and some guy.
(Karol asked me earlier if we'll ever let her into the Cedar Rapids Media Elite.  Maybe we will someday...)

Another dance floor shot.

And here it is. "That Magic Moment".  I use the power vested in me as one of the founders of the Cedar Rapids Media Elite to officially swear Karol in as a member on the final night of the place where the group was first born.  (Instead of swearing on a Bible, we do shots of Jagermeister.)

WELCOME ABOARD, KAROL!!!

Sam Vidnovic.
His dad Glenn played basketball for Iowa in the late 60's/early 70's, and they lived across the street from us in Iowa City when I was growing up.  (Of course, back then Sam was like two feet tall.  Now he's got beer.)

Dave Moore.
His sister Jennifer was a jock at KRNA when I first started there in 1993 (back when he still owned Soho's...now known as Grizzly's), he's a former Fieldhouse co-owner, and he's the current owner of MacInernie's Pub & Grill.

Becky Bartals and me.  (Becky shows up elsewhere on this page here as a guest at my 29th birthday celebration...also at The Fieldhouse.)

Again with the dance floor.

I drink with Jeremy...just like at the Magic Bus!

A truly historic moment...the last underage drinking bust ever at The Fieldhouse.

Bask in the moment!

fucked up (adj) -
1) To be severely physically assaulted
2) To be intoxicated
3) To drink mixed drinks out of those giant-ass "Mug Night" mugs

Former KRNA and KCRG sales guy and current Common Sense Advertising founder Dirk Keller buys me a shot of Goldschlager.

I address the crowd one last time.

I say my final farewell.

A going-away shot.

The Morning After.
